Vacations are meant for flossing off stress, brushing up on adventure, and filling your days with fun—not toothaches! But unfortunately, dental drama doesn’t take a vacation just because you do. If tooth trouble sneaks into your travel plans, don’t let it bite into your good time. With a few smart steps, you can grin and bear it until you’re back home and in your dentist’s chair.

Tips for Tooth Pain During Vacation

1. Assess the Tooth Pain

Is it a dull ache, sharp pain, or constant throbbing? Try to identify if the pain is triggered by hot or cold food, pressure, or if it’s spontaneous. Mild discomfort from pressure changes (such as on flights) may go away on its own, but persistent or severe pain may indicate something more serious like an infection or cracked tooth.

2. Manage the Pain

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce inflammation and discomfort. If swelling is present, applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15-minute intervals can help. Avoid chewing on the affected side and steer clear of very hot, cold, or sugary foods.

3. Rinse with Salt Water

A warm salt water rinse can help cleanse the area and soothe irritated gums. Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gently swish for 30 seconds. This can temporarily ease pain and reduce bacteria.

4. Seek Temporary Dental Help if Necessary

If your pain becomes unbearable or you suspect an abscess or broken tooth, seek local emergency dental care. Many cities have walk-in dental clinics or urgent care centers that can help with temporary treatment until you return home.

5. Reach Out to Libby & The Cohost Oklahoma Team

If you're staying in a fabulous airbnb hosted by Libby and the Cohost Oklahoma team, you're in great hands. Their concierge-style approach to guest care means they’re more than happy to help you find trusted local dental providers and pharmacies. Don’t hesitate to reach out—they’re a fantastic local resource when something unexpected like tooth pain pops up.

6. Follow Up with Your Dentist

Even if the pain subsides, schedule an appointment with your regular dentist as soon as you return. Pain is often a sign that something needs attention—early treatment can prevent bigger (and more expensive) problems down the road.

Tooth pain can be frustrating—but it doesn’t have to ruin your trip. With a little preparation and support, you can stay as comfortable as possible and still enjoy your getaway.
